Crocheting ..... and a life shared
In the past year there have been periods of time that I have been physically unable to sit at the machine and sew. Rather than allow myself to get frustrated and depressed ... as is quite easy for me to do ...... I picked up an old past time of mine ... Crocheting.
At first it bothered my hands a lot but then I found these new ergonomic hooks. There are a few different kinds, so I tried a few till I found one that worked best for me.... it is flat with a small cushioned area in just the right spot. Now I crochet away. There was also another problem .... because of some of the very strong medicine I was on; it was difficult for to fully concentrate to follow the directions. My husband and I had many a good laugh over some of my strange creations. But I happily crocheted odd shaped scarves and hats for friends and family.... who very politely thanked me for the "lovely" creation.
Then I found a charity that was looking for people to make 8 inch squares either knitted or crocheted. A SQUARE !!!!! I can do that !!! Yippee!!! So I made about 100 squares for the orphanages in Rwanda and other places in Africa. No directions to follow and it was good strengthening exercise for my fine motor skills. It kept my wandering spaced out drugged mind occupied. AND the square was actually useful to someone in this world. I was happy.
As time went by and the drugs lessened I was able to do more with the crocheting and made a Granny Square blanket. A very basic design but a major accomplishment for me. The picture below is my blanket:
I found a pretty throw made with hexagons in a granny-square-type pattern. I still had trouble following the instructions but when I could not figure it out, I just made up my own pattern. It all worked except when I made 7 sided motifs instead of 6 ... :-). Below is that blanket ....
The tedious part is weaving all the hanging strains back into the pattern. You can see there are plenty to do via the next picture .....
On my last post I mentioned that we are eagerly awaiting the birth of my niece's (Jenica) second baby, a little girl named Aubrey. It is a happy/sad time for all of us because in April my sister & Jenica's mother, Melinda died very unexpectedly and quickly.
She was at Pilates and started feeling short of breath. By the time the paramedics got her to the hospital she was comatose and expired the next day. She had a massive brain hemorrhage. A very tragic event for all of us but we are getting thru. It is hardest, of course, for my niece. She is an only child herself and her second child is her first little girl.
There were no goodbyes but my sister was a registered organ donor. About 3 weeks after her death we received a letter from the Life Sharing Group that her donation had help over 60 people with organs and tissue donation. That meant a lot to all of us.

Thank you for stopping by and reading the blog. I would love to hear from you if you would like to leave a note. Thank you and God Bless. Joanne
PS I will post pictures when Aubrey arrives !!!!

Brody's Quilt
Hello again, have had a couple of things occur to prevent me from blogging. One being that I am having to relearn how to manage the pictures. I continue to persevere.
- This posting is about Body's quilt. Brody is my niece's 2.5 year old son who is a bundle of activity and brings us lots of joy. The picture below is the bedding set that his Mom got for his crib and room when he was born. Now Brody has a little sister on her way in just 6 weeks. So his parents set up his crib to be a big-boy-bed. Then my niece (Jenica) got the idea of turning the baby quilt into a quilt big enough to fit the big-boy bed. Obviously, the big rectangle in the photo is the baby quilt.
I came up with a design and then we spent some time shopping for the perfect fabric. Jenica lives at least 45 minutes away from me, so we decided to for me to spend Memorial weekend at her house sewing. That way we could work straight thru and not waste time with all the driving or gas money.
At first I thought I could just build the larger size quilt around the smaller one. But I quickly realized that that was a poor plan. Brody's Mom and I took his little quilt apart and began the process of "building" the new one.
First came the striped fabric and getting the "perfect" mitered corners in place. Then a wider navy perimeter was added to the quilt and then another round of stripes ...... (By the way, did you know how hard it is to match navy blue? I really did not realize how many shades of navy blue there are in this universe Egads! That was a pain to accomplish!) ....... The quilt was looking pretty good at this point. Brody was enjoying watching his quilt grow and would often jump up and down on it to show his enthusiastic approval. Similar to the kitty-help I have at home !!
Another round of stripes and navy and we were ready for the best part of the design (IMHO) ..... adding all the stars around the edge that will drop down on the side of the bed
And more stars .......
While I was sewing my niece, Jenica , started working on her own project .... making hair-bows for her daughter, Aubrey who is due to arrive July 6 via C-section. (Jenica calls her C-section date Aubrey's "eviction notice".) Jenica loves the baby bows that are so popular right now so she bought a few. But after a thorough inspection she realized she could make her own. So she has been hard at work creating her own hair adornments for her daughter. She came up with some real pretty ideas and each bow was better than the one before. Jenica's bow work space and mess ! I had the other end of the table to mess up!
Here are some of her initial creations. Aubrey will be "styling" from the day she is born!!!! A bow to match each onesie outfit !
Finally the new flimsy (quilt top) is on the bed and it fits just great!
We finished the 3 day weekend by making the quilt sandwich. I have it at my house now and it is slowly being finished.
I hope this posts with all the pictures clear. For some reason I am still struggling with using the new blog program with IPhoto. I know it is just me .... with each tutoring session I learn and retain a little more.
Thanks for stopping by. God bless you all!

Butterfly Garden
My last attempt to load the photos obviously failed, but my DD from D.C. has been visiting and while here she is trying to teach me how to upload the photos .... after she first figures it out for herself. So here I go again ......
Back to the Butterfly Garden project that I have been slowly working on. My cousin, Cathy, and I both fell in love with this design and decided to do it together. I chose it ... well, first because it is gorgeous .... and at then, because I was looking for a project I could pick up and work on by hand on days that I am unable to sit at the machine for very long.
After piecing the individual nine blocks together I had 9 small blocks to make EACH Big Block (BB) square .... 81 small blocks = 9 BB .... just sound of that number makes me tired. I did not realize until I wrote this truly how much prep work went into the start of the quilt.
This is one BB. Another reason I chose this quilt was to practice my appliqué technique. I used to make a lot of appliqué quilts but have not done so in many years. I stuffed the flower centers and butterfly body for a tarpunto effect. Here is some detail on it ....
This next clip is a close up on the embroidery. I love how there is such variety of handwork to do on this
quilt. I began to get even more creative on this block and added some beads to the butterfly wings.
Big Block #3 is almost finished .... so I almost have 3 out 9 BBs completed.
If you look closely below, in the small light blue square you will see buttons instead of the original design's embroidered flowers. They don't show up too well in the pix ..... it would help if I cropped the pix better ..... but, oh well, that is another lesson.
My cousin is doing her BG Quilt in 30s fabrics and it too looks very pretty but also very different. I have seen many other color combos with this design on the internet. All of them are gorgeous! It is inspiring to see how each individual interprets the same design. The variety of color combos everyone has is amazing. It is part of what I love about quilting ... such individuality and all so pretty.
One day this will hang on my living room wall behind the couch. I have a lot of
dark brown in that room so this will set it off nicely. Brown and aqua is just one
of my favorite color combinations ..... as is purple and green or yellow ... oh, and
I love red and aqua also. Do you have fav color combos that you repeatedly
lean towards in your creative process?
Would love to hear from you ...... Love and hugs with happy stitches.

Hello again
My dear blog- friends ... please do not give up on me. At my last post none of the pictures came thru. This was the same problem I had when I stopped blogging before. This time tho, I am determined not to give up or quit .
My mother-in-law has been visiting for the past 2 months so I did not feel free to totally dedicate myself to solving my computer problems. She has returned home so now I can solve this problem .... AGAIN. Took some pictures today with my real camera (not phone camera) and am off to the Apple Store tomorrow to solve this problem once and for all. Have tried everything and everyone else prior to this .... so now it is time to finally pull myself up by my boot straps and go to the source.
It is not that I have any magnificent works to show you ... or that I am a GREAT writer or picture taker or even quilter. But you guys are great to communicate and share with. Will let you know how it goes.
Much love, Joanne

Butterfly Garden
One of the projects I have been slowly working on is a design called Butterfly Garden. My cousin, Cathy, and I both fell in love with it and decided to do it together. We knew it would be a long term project which is what I was looking for..... to have something I could pick up when I wanted to relax and do handwork.
First I had to piece all nine blocks together ..... 9 small blocks to make each Big Block square. Then 9 of THOSE BB (Big Blocks to form the quilt top.
Here comes the challenging part for me ...... loading the pictures. The pictures I have put here are not all from the correct angle, but am not sure where and when to edit the photos ... I felt joyous just getting them on here!! Stay with me .... I will eventually master this part. I just seem to have a mental block and am dense about the picture thing.
This one is sideways .... made obvious by the door knob placement !! :-) Big Block #2:

This one has the correct viewpoint .... Yeah!! 1 pix done 100% correct!!
This is Big block #1:

This is a view of quilt detail on BB #1

Here we have detail on BB #2:
Big Block #3 is almost finished .... so I sorta have 3 out 9 BBs completed.
I eventually want to go back an add embellishments in the form of beads
and charms. Have already substituted some of the flowers with buttons.

I am back !!!!
It has been about a year since I posted and I have missed visiting with everyone. First I want to thank those of you who checked up on me during my absence to see how I was. I really appreciated the care and concern you expressed to me. Appreciated it a LOT !! It is a large part of why I have decided to be courageous and start blogging again.
The trouble started with hardware/computer/printer/camera issues. I could not get my photos to load for the life of me and then other difficulties developed.
Then my health deteriorated further. I got very depressed about this .... I did not want to be depressed but I was. The condition of chronic pain and fatigue can be brutal at times. This past year was one of those very dark seasons.
Physically I am not out of the woods and the truth of the matter is that this may be as good as it is gonna get. Doctors have stopped answering me when I ask "when is it going to get better?" But it is something I can accept now. Accept what is and the loss.
During this yukky, yukky year, I kept quilting ..... YEAH !!!! Along with prayer and God's sustenance to help me .... there has been quilting .... creativity bringing light to some dark times. Am so glad I renewed this part of my life before this particular storm hit me. Being creative is such a blessing. My DGD gave me a boost when she told me my stuff looks just like the stuff for sale in Anthropology. That got her another quilt from her dear ole Grandma !!!! Smart girl!!
I did have to stop quilting for a few months when I fell and broke my foot. I found I was just not coordinated enough to use the other foot on the foot pedal. Couldn't drive either. It did not help that the fracture did not show on the x-rays until I had been trying to walk on it for a month with excruciating leg pain ... so they took more x-rays from a different angles and what do you know?!! .... it was fractured. Great !!!! One more thing !!!
I was hand sewing but found I needed something even more mindless to do .... so I got out the ole yarn and crochet hooks. Been having a ball with that while my foot was healing.... my cats love my yarn as much as they love my fabrics. :-)
I will be visiting my old friends this week and will leave you all notes. I have pictures but not ready to tackle loading them today. Love to all.

Sewing Lesson with my niece ...
Today I had the wonderful joy of giving my niece (NJ) her first sewing lesson. We went to the fabric store and she got the needed notions of pins, scissors, thread etc. We picked out a pattern and fabric for her first project ... diaper cover for her baby boy who is about to have his first birthday celebration.
At her house I had to get familiar with her new machine, so I could then show her how to use it. It took a little time, but we figured it out and she got to sew her first straight line. Exciting !! By that time, I had to leave to pick up my DGD:T. I will be going back on friday so we can put it all together.
Apparently her husband loved the quilts I brought to show them when she first got her machine. So eventually she wants to make a quilt. Yeah !!
In the meantime I have been working on finishing up my WIPs from 2010. I decided to have a big pinwheel party ... all my borders and sashing will be pinwheels. I have well over a 100 of them going all at once ... assembly-line style ....
Above is about half of the completed pinwheels with Moda charm pack of Swell (older line of fabric). I added the solids. This is what got me started on the pinwheel idea to also use for borders.
Well I am having difficulty uploading anymore pictures. Stay tuned I will be back to finish but it is late tonite.
Love and hugs, Joanne

Hello again!!
I am here .... quietly working on projects and enjoying the holidays with friends and family. One of the yearly traditions I have with my DGDs is to make gingerbread houses together. We started when the girls were very young and it was a major mess and quite a challenge. One year we even made a gingerbread train and trees too. But the girls are older now and are pretty independent with their creative process. Altho Lucky, my "quilt supervisor", decided it was time to also help them with their houses this year.
Lucky is helping Ju and Tay but Tay's pix would not load for me
No blizzard at Tay's house ... :-)
There is a lesson that I have learned repeatedly in my life. And even tho I am now a grandmother, I had to be reminded of this lesson again this year. ( I am a very slow learn at times.) Anyhow, I still haven't learned to never say 'never' ..... " I would never do that" and I find myself at some point and time doing that very thing. Sometimes the phrase is said in self-righteousness and other times said in dread. My first Minkee quilt was so difficult to make, that I said I would never make another one. But then I found myself with so much left over fabric that I could not let it go to waste ... so I found myself starting a second one.
Then about 2.5 weeks before Christmas my DD asked me if I would consider making another. You see the daughter of her very close friend wanted a blanket like Robin's for Christmas. Not only did she want one but it was 1 of only 2 gifts she that she asked for. Guess what .... yes, I made another one .....
I even managed some pillows to match ....
I have a modest collection of teapots. It is not a collection that I intentionally started. It started when a friend of mine died of Hodgkins Disease when we were both 24 and she left me her teapot. Someone else saw it and gave me another. Then another person added to those two .... and so my collection has grown over the years. I got a new tea set to add to the collection this year for Christmas .....
This has got to be the smallest tea set in the world and I love it !! The lid actually comes off the teapot and the sugar bowl. There is enough space inside to put a few drops of tea too. How fun !!!! Adorable !!!
Since the holidays I have been finishing quilting projects .... the Puzzle Quilt and the black & purple one made it to D.C. in time for Christmas for the DGD. Just finished my DD's quilt this week. I have to finish her hubby's quilt and then those are off to D.C. too. Hopefully this week.
Would love to hear from you all. I will be catching up on all your blogs this week ..... cheers and hugs to all .....

An opportunity to bless another ....
A friend of my DD's here in San Diego was diagnosed recently with breast cancer. Thank God it was early in the process that the cancer was found. She did not have a lump, it was just a spot on the mammogram. After a few tests and a couple surgical procedures ... they found she had 'triple negative cancer" .... one of the worst kinds of breast cancer one can get .... very hard to treat. So now she is going thru chemo treatments.
I asked my DD about making her a quilt (sofa-throw size). Found out her fav colors were purple and pink. I could not find any 'breast cancer awareness' fabric any where ... NONE! But then late one night on Etsy by way of Beijing, China I found some and the only color she had was purple and pink. Yeah!!! I was so happy!!!! But then the fabric arrived ... it was REALLY pink and purple ...

It was very bright ! So my DD had to find out if her friend liked pastels or brights .... I was in good shape, her preference was brights. I also discovered the fabric was not 44" wide ... it was 60" ... YIPPEE !! I had more than enough fabric. So I made my best quick, standby: D9P ....
If you look close there is another breast cancer awareness fabric in there .... light pink. I found less than a yard of it toward the end of this project and worked in in.
Folded in half it was perfect size for sitting for hours in those infusion chairs at the chemo room. Then unfold it and it was perfect to curl up in. I was so happy to be able to bless this gal so much.
This is the semi-finished quilt top. I added dark purple for binding and the original fabric was the main fabric for the backing... stitching in the ditch to finish it off. Discovered this dream product that is a spray-basting product - spray fabric adhesive. I am sure many of you know about it, but it was my first experience. What an absolutely incredible product ... it made stitching the quilt together a dream. It was so easy and wonderful !!!
DD, her 2 DDs and myself presented the quilt to my daughter's lovely friend. It was a very special moment for all of us.
At some point in time in the midst of the sewing rush-job, I had a birthday and this wonderful gift arrived for me from my cousin. She is a friend, a fellow quilter, a Christian, a blogger and an inspiration. She made this for me!! How fortunate I am ....
Would love to hear from you all....

More projects with another helper
I love the reds and browns in this quilt! The fabric is Maison de Garance from Moda. The center is another D9P. Then bordered with pinwheels around. It took 1 layer cake, 2 charm packs and fat quarter each of dark brown, med brown and red. Voila !! Here it is .... just for fun ....
I have been doing other things besides D9P .... honest, I have .... here is the proof:
This is for DGD-M. Her tastes lean toward a more modern, chic look. We had gathered some of the fabrics before she moved this summer, but as I began to play with it this fall, I realized that some of the fabrics were not going to work in the total scheme of things.
These each had glitter on them, so that was my BIG clue. She wants glitter & glitz ! I found some black and charcoal sparkly fabrics that went well. Then added some cool Tina Givens. Looking good ....
About the picture above: It represents 4 blocks. There is an area about halfway toward the left that looks very white and bright ... frankly, it looks awful in the picture. In reality, it is a very pretty lavender and looks good .... especially now that I have added more in other areas of the quilt top (I can't get used to calling it a flimsy)
Now if you look again about center towards the top of the quilt is a dark gray area that looks smudgy. This fabric is causing an design conflict in our family ... My DD thinks this looks like duct tape and should be banned from the quilt. Her daughters agree ... of course. My husband, however, thinks it looks very classy and chic ... this from the guy who lives in t-shirts (1 for day time and 1 to sleep in) and uses duct tape regularly .... OK! I have already changed that area 2 or 3 times already, but I have agreed to let them audition 3 or 4 other fabrics this weekend. We shall see .....
I put together another block this morning before crashing for the day ......
I only turned around for less the 30 seconds .... really, I did not even leave the room. Here she is ..... Miss Kitty offering her opinion as well on the new block. Jeez !! Everyone has to get in on the act !!
Since I started quilting again it is becoming more and more of a family activity. There is even a rumor that one the DGDs wants to try sewing. Wouldn't that be fun !!
That is it for now .... would love to hear from all of you. I really appreciate all your comments and do respond whenever possible (unless you are a no-reply blogger) ..... til next time ....

New projects
I have been having trouble with the blogger and so I have been unable to post for a while. Today when I tried again, there was an added tool that had been missing before .... so maybe now it will work.
First on a personal note: I applied for disability this week.... yea team !!! After a couple of appointments my doctor put me on 3 months medical leave. At the end of that, doc will re-evaluate my status. Progress at last ! Again I want to thank everyone for your support, encouragement and very positive input/advice. Now on to the quilts ......
Remember the Oh-Cherry-Oh D9P from August? My DGD-J fell in love with it and eventually very tactfully requested it for her new bed as a bedspread. I had to search high and low for some additional Oh Cherry prints as I needed to enlarge it a little so it would fit. But no luck. But then Elaine at Soggy Bottom Flats found some for me. Yeah and Thank you, girl !! I was then able to enlarge the quilt top enough to fit her bed and it is off to the quilter. This is an old pix of it:
I had a very insistent helper as I was finishing the top ... Mama kitty, Lucky. When I would spread the project out on the floor and turn my back, she would come and pull the edges up in a swirl pattern to make herself a bed. I would come back to find her parked in the middle of her newly made bed. I would shoo her away, straighten it out and make whatever design adjustments I needed. When I would trot off to the sewing machine out of her sight (yes, she always waited until I was out of the room), she would come back and build her bed again. We went thru this for almost an hour. Knowing how stubbornly persistent she is, I let her go until her nap was done. I had other things I could work on .....
The Puzzle Quilt is at the quilter as well. I made a pillow for DGD-E to toss on the bed with her quilt. I need to get the sham done as well .... maybe another pillow too. This one is an 18" square Twisted 9 Patch made with leftovers from her quilt:
Have already started DGD-M's quilt. It is very different than all the others I have been worked on thus far. Will post it later this week, now that I have figured out how to use the new system. It is a simpler quilt pattern, but still choosing the fabrics to add is the most difficult part of it. Not all of the fabrics we had originally picked worked well together.... especially one little area. I am on the fourth fabric audition ... hope this one is IT !!!

Puzzle Finish
First I want to thank all of you who emailed me and left comments regarding my last post. I tried to respond to all of you but in case I missed someone then .... THANK YOU !!! Your words of enouragement and advice were very helpful and appreciated. As corny as it sounds ... it did make a difference in my life.
My time at home has been extended another 2 weeks for now. My physical problems remain the same but my perspective and attitude have changed tremendously in the past week. Amazing !!
Now on to my finished quilt top:
That last stretch to the finish was an effort .... this is the first bed-size quilt I have done since returning to quilting and I love the end result ! The top was too big for me to handle for a full picture but when it comes back from the longarm lady I will get a full picture of it.
There was a huge mess all over the house when I was done! OMG! I was further blessed that my DH did not offer one complaint about. He even helped me clean it all up by vacuuming. What a sweetheart!
I was curious as to how many different fabrics I used. A scrap here, a fat quarter there and ended up with over 100. Here are the leftovers:
I still need to make a matching pillow sham, but am taking a break from these little 6 inch squares for now. I have an "Origins" layer cake to make into a D9P. I told you I was addicted to the pattern!! It is simple, easy and quick. Yeah !!!

Hello !
When I first started blogging several months ago, I met a few people who were making efforts to be real and be honest in their blogging. They really touched my heart and their words were inspiring to me. That is part of why I started blogging. But here I am facing the choice .... shall I be honest about who I am right now or not. Then I came I came across a blogger (new to me) who was being frankly honest and it truly affected me. So here it goes .....
I have struggled at my job as an RN for a very long time because the demands of the job were becoming greater and greater .... because of health issues I am limited in what I can and cannot do, but as business was growing my ability to keep pace has not. I like what I do and I am good at my job (I should be good at it as I have been doing it for over 30 yrs !!!) I have worked most of my life ....
Here I am having to decide if I can keep working or not. Do I retire or should I go on disability? Maybe I just need to take a medical leave of absence. When do I do this? I really wanted to make it at least thru to the end of the year ... that is what I was developing as my plan. But maybe I am just giving up too soon, maybe I am not not trying hard enough, maybe if I get more organized or cut my hours and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. After all I should count myself fortunate just to have a job in this economy ..... yadda yadda yadda yadda ....
And then the bursitis in my hip flared up again ... worse than ever. I couldn't take off right away because the other full time RN was on vacation. By the time I stopped working the pain was excruciating and I was more exhausted than I usually am. So now I am home for 2 weeks, going to Physical Therapy, on pain meds 3x stronger than what I was on and barely able to even sew on the quilts. It is the end of my first week home and the progress I have made is that I realize that I need more than 2 weeks ..... now what?
I think it helps just to write this. I need to keep praying and stick a rod up my butt and be strong enough to face reality !!! That's what .... :-)

Pinwheel Party
My DGD finally got her cuddle-quilt and she loves it ! Perfect timing because she just got her new bed this weekend. It doesn't fit on her bed, but she didn't care ...
I had to make it bigger than the original pattern so she could wrap up in it. I added 11 or 12 blocks ... some were repeats with the colors rearranged and 2 of them I just 'made up' on my own.
I think you can see the quilting pretty good here. I just love the long arm quilter I found .... she is soo nice and did a superb job!
The back is a pretty flower sculptured Minkee pattern. Just right for curling up with to read a book or watch TV ..... altho it was over 100 here today!! That is uncommonly hot for this area.
DGD has laid claim to the most recent D9P I did last month. It is all cherry print fabrics and she asked if she could have it for her bed. I was just playing with the fabric & 2 layer cakes when I made it just for fun. I already have a taker!
No progress on the Puzzle Quilt .... been working too much again. It is on the sewing table for my day off tomorrow. Gonna be a fun day!!!
Would love to hear from you all ... Hugs and love, Joanne

Minkee #1 is finished !!
I got DD1's minkee quilt back from the long-arm lady. She did such a fantastic job !! It is a very hard fabric to work with (as I have said before) .... but she did not realize I had a pieced minkee top plus a minkee backing. She said it was quite a challenge! She did just enough quilting for it to be very pretty without distracting from all the different textures of the fabrics ... just wish the quilting showed up better in the picture.
Most important (to me at least) is that my DD1 absolutely loves it !!!! She wrapped up in it to watch the football game and kept telling everyone "don't touch, this is MY blanket." As a Mom, it was fun to see the little girl in her today. It matches her living room beautifully.
Now I have to finish Minkee #2 .....
I also picked up DGD's Pinwheel Quilt with minkee backing. No picture yet as I have to add the binding, but she enjoyed using it today ... the perfect cuddle quilt.
Progress report on the Puzzle Quilt: Now at 107 - 6 inch blocks fully attached to one another. Almost half way there. Slow but sure, it is getting done ....
It is now too big to hang on my closet door. I will have to find someplace else to hang it while I am deciding what goes next. The entertainment center is perfect, but football season has begun. :-)
Thanks for stopping by ...
